The Ordinary Mission Field—Family

Ephesians 5:15-6:4

  • Rev. Scott Simpson
  • October 19, 2025

In this sermon, Rev. Scott Simpson continues the series Along the Way: Discipleship of the Ordinary by focusing on the family as our most immediate mission field. Drawing from Ephesians 5:15–6:4, he explains that discipleship involves both our vertical relationship with God and our horizontal relationships with one another—especially within the home. He reminds us that honoring our parents is the first commandment with a promise and that Jesus Himself modeled this obedience and care for His mother throughout His life. Rev. Simpson clarifies that honoring parents does not mean blind obedience, idolizing, or even necessarily liking them, but rather recognizing their worth, forgiving their shortcomings, and treating them with respect. He calls parents to make it easy for their children to honor them by being humble, patient, and authentic, not provoking or discouraging their children. Ultimately, the family is where discipleship begins—a sacred place where love, forgiveness, and faith are learned and lived daily. He closes in prayer, asking God to turn the hearts of parents and children toward one another in love, reflecting Christ’s presence in every home.
