The Ordinary Mission Field: Work - Modern

Colossians 3:22-4:1

  • Rev. Dr. John Kaiser
  • September 21, 2025

This sermon focused on Colossians 3:22–4:1, where Paul teaches that whatever we do, we should work as if serving the Lord. The pastor addressed the difficult topic of slavery in the text, explaining that Paul’s goal was not to cause rebellion but to teach principles that would eventually end slavery through Christian love and equality. Paul reminds us that in Christ, slave and master are equal, and all are called to serve God faithfully. The message challenged listeners to see their daily work — whether paid, unpaid, or even in retirement — as a mission field and an act of worship. We were reminded not to divide life into “sacred” and “secular” but to honor God in everything we do. The sermon drew on Martin Luther and John Calvin, who taught that honest work is pleasing to God and benefits our neighbors. Finally, we were encouraged to work with joy, humility, and purpose, remembering that ultimately it is Christ whom we serve.
