The Born vs. Born (Again) Leader

1 John 5:13-21

  • Rev. Dr. Bob Fuller
  • August 10, 2025

This sermon, based on 1 John 5:13–21, ties together the conclusion of a summer study on the epistle with the ordination of new elders, deacons, and trustees. Pastor Fuller emphasizes that Christian leadership is not about simply transferring worldly leadership skills into a church context, but about being a born again leader—transformed by the Holy Spirit rather than merely a “born leader” with natural charisma. Drawing on the Gospel of John’s account of Jesus and Nicodemus, the message stresses that new birth in Christ is a complete remaking of a person, not just minor improvements. Born again leaders are marked by a secure identity in Christ, deep knowledge of God and the people they lead, obedience rooted in grace, a robust prayer life, and a commitment to restoring others rather than policing them. They also guard their hearts against idolatry, including the subtle temptation to make leadership itself an idol. Leadership in the church is grounded in calling, not credentials, and is exercised through dependence on God, not self-reliance. The church, he says, does not need heroes but humble leaders who love and serve faithfully. Ultimately, those being ordained are commissioned not to lead from personal strength or ambition, but from their salvation and trust in God.
