Guard Your Heart

1 John 2:15-29

  • Rev. Dr. Joe Moore
  • July 6, 2025

In this sermon from First Presbyterian Church during the Fourth of July weekend, Pastor Joe reflects on the sobering events of recent flooding and ties them into the ongoing summer study of 1 John. Focusing on 1 John 2:15–29, the message centers on the command to “guard your heart” against the desires of the flesh, the eyes, and the pride of life—things that pull us away from abiding in Christ. He acknowledges how easy it is to delay doing what we know is right, both practically and spiritually, using a personal story about ignoring worn Jeep tires as a metaphor for spiritual neglect. Just as delaying maintenance nearly led to disaster, so too can ignoring spiritual truth put us in harm’s way. The sermon emphasizes that Christians are called not just to know the truth but to live it, abiding in Christ through obedience, community, and truth. John warns against false teachers and urges believers to remain grounded in what they have known from the beginning. Abiding in Christ means living with awareness, trusting God over the world, and being ready for His return.
