Discipleship of the Ordinary

  • Rev. Dr. Bob Fuller
  • August 17, 2025

In this sermon, Rev. Dr. Bob Fuller emphasizes that discipleship is not limited to religious programs or Sunday worship but is rooted in the ordinary, daily rhythms of life. Drawing from Liturgy of the Ordinary by Tish Harrison Warren, he suggests that seemingly dull moments—like brushing teeth or running errands—can be sacred spaces where God is present. Using Jeremiah 29 and Matthew 28, he shows how both exiles in Babylon and Jesus' disciples were called to live faithfully and make disciples as they go about everyday life. Dr. Fuller introduces the idea of sacramental living, where ordinary things point to spiritual realities and God's grace is found in daily routines. He shares his own recent health disruption as a reminder of how easily we overlook life's basic blessings until they’re threatened. The call is to acknowledge God in all our ways, learning to see His presence in the mundane. The sermon concludes with the assurance of God's purpose and presence in all things, affirming that the ordinary matters to God because we matter to Him.
