Devoted to Prayer
The Gospel According to Luke Luke 22:39-46
- Rev. Dr. Bob Fuller

Rev. Dr. Bob Fuller’s sermon reflects on Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane to show how the early church—and believers today—are shaped by a life of prayer. Drawing from Acts 2, he emphasizes that the disciples were devoted not just to praying, but to praying in a way formed by Christ’s suffering, humility, and trust in the Father. Jesus’ prayer, “not my will, but yours be done,” reveals both deep honesty before God and complete surrender to His will. Fuller highlights that Jesus prayed not only for Himself, but also for His disciples and for all future believers, demonstrating profound love even in His agony. In contrast, the disciples fell asleep, showing how exhaustion, fear, and complacency can make us spiritually vulnerable. The sermon teaches that prayer must be earnest, vigilant, and honest—especially in times of weakness—because it is truly a matter of life and death. Finally, believers are reminded to pray with hope, trusting that God’s answers, though sometimes unexpected, are always good, as seen in the resurrection. Above all, we are encouraged that we never pray alone, for God is with us and intercedes for us, calling us to rise and pray.
