Be One: Unity in the Love of the Father and the Son

  • Rev. Larry Coulter
  • February 1, 2026

Rev. Larry Coulter reflects on Jesus’ prayer in John 17, reminding us that it is the only recorded prayer where Jesus explicitly prays for future believers—including us. In this prayer, Jesus does not ask for success or influence, but for unity among His followers, a unity modeled after the relational oneness of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This unity is not about sameness or agreement, but about deep relationships marked by knowing one another, working together, and having each other’s backs. Rev. Coulter illustrates this through the three movements of marriage and friendship—face to face intimacy, shoulder to shoulder purpose, and back to back loyalty—and shows how these apply to life in the church. At the foot of the cross, pride dies, control is surrendered, forgiveness is practiced, and grace is remembered, shaping the kind of unity Jesus desires. Jesus teaches that the world will recognize the truth of the gospel not by our perfection, but by our love and unity. The sermon concludes with a call for each believer to personally commit to living in unity, for the sake of Christ and His witness in the world.
