A New Commandment: Love One Another

  • Rev. Larry Coulter
  • January 4, 2026

Rev. Larry Coulter invites the congregation to begin the new year by listening closely to Jesus’ words in John 13, spoken on the night before the cross. He explains that John’s Gospel reveals who Jesus is directly, especially through the “I am” statements and Jesus’ repeated call to live in relationship with “one another.” At the Last Supper, Jesus gives a newcommandment—not only to love God or neighbor, but to love one another within the community of faith. This kind of love is mutual, active, and learned over time, as God continually shapes our character through life together in the church. Rev. Coulter reminds us that the church is a school for love, where people who differ still remain committed to one another. True love, he teaches, is not a feeling but a steady devotion to the good of others. As we move into 2026, Jesus’ command to “love one another” becomes both our calling and our witness to the world.
